In the regional centre of the Southern Great Plains the Piarists were a dominant intellectual layer. The spiritual enrichment of the seat of the diocese has been helped by the teaching order since the beginning of the 18th century. After the period of „nationalized institutions” the order asked for a new missionary area in place of their old historical building on the downtown border.

The Piarists who were given a vacant lot in the depths of the housing estates surrounding the town settled there with the idea of a small town centre to be developed. A special situation occurred later on when the Szeged branch of a multinational chain store arrives in the neighbourhood but this event further strengthened the mission of the Piarists who have their own set of values. The cloisters-like secondary school complex was built together with a monastery, a dormitory and then a gymnasium and sports fields were added; later, it is to be extended with a primary school, a kindergarten and swimming-pool. The church is situated at the closets point to the housing estate and it represents a spiritual emphasis at the main entrance of the building complex. The building of the church has a reduced single-slope roof with the body of the bell-tower hardly emerging. The false archway of its western frontispiece turns towards the external world of heterogeneous values which can be accessed through the southern opening from the direction of secondary school. The huge double glass wall constructed on the southern frontispiece supplies the asymmetric church space accompanied with a side-aisle with broken light but more light is coming through the round window in the western wall and the bent transom window of the eastern altar wall.

A Dél-Alföld regionális központjában régóta meghatározó szellemi közeget jelentenek a piaristák. Az egyházmegyei székhely lelki gazdagodását a XVIII. század elejétől segíti a tanító rend. A belváros határán álló, egykori patinás historikus épületüket az „államosítás intézményrendszerének” megszűnte után a rend egy új missziós épülettel kérte kiváltani.

A várost körgyűrűben övező lakótelepek sűrűjébe kijelölt összefüggő beépítetlen területen egy fokozatosan kiépülő kisvárosi központ gondolatával telepedtek meg. Sajátos szituációt eredményezett idővel a multinacionális kereskedelmi áruházlánc szegedi tagjának megjelenése a közvetlen szomszédságában, de ez még inkább a kimért értékrendek mentén haladó piaristák misszióját erősíti. Létrejött a kerengős rendszerű gimnázium együttese a rendházzal és a kollégiummal, ami később tornacsarnokkal, sportpályákkal gyarapodott, a tervek szerint pedig általános iskolával, óvodával és uszodával is bővül.

A templom a lakótelepi „városszövethez” legközelebbi pontra került, az intézmény együttes főbejáratánál ad lelki hangsúlyt. Tömege redukált félnyeregtetős forma, melyből csak alig emelkedik ki a harangfal teste. Nyugati homlokzata árkáddal fordul az értékrendjében heterogén külvilág felé, melynek valós hívogató szerkesztése a gimnázium felőli déli megnyitásban realizálódik. A déli homlokzatra szerkesztett hatalmas kettős üvegfal színes fénnyel deríti az aszimmetrikus, oldalhajóval kísért templomteret, melyet a nyugati végfal körablaka és a keleti oltárfal síkban megdöntött felülvilágítója gazdagít.
